I'm a fan (and you should be too) because... starts out with Mr. David Grohl - he's an amazing musician, I've always been a fan of him on drums starting in of course, Nirvana, but I remembered hearing Marigold on that Heart Shaped Box single and thought - WOW, Dave can sing too! Never got to see Nirvana but saw many of their recorded shows and just thought Dave was amazing to watch on drums. I attended the first Foofighters show in Chicago at the Metro -- Wow. From then on I was a huge Foofighters fan, have all the albums saw them in concert several times.
When the Queens of the Stone Age video for No One Knows came out and I saw Dave in it, I immediately KNEW something awesome was happening. I bought the album and fell in love with QOTSA as well. Josh is such a bad ass and most every day people I talk to have no clue about his work - it's a shame. I try to coax people to take a closer listen, but then again I think, bah, I'll keep this awesomeness to myself. Those that get it about QOTSA, I connect with right away. They flippin rock on so many levels. I love every album and they have all grown on me more and more, every time I've listened to them and for reasons that change quite often. I love the darkness and just the variety of influences and things going on in each song. For me, it's just ear candy. I love it.
And then of course there's John Paul Jones. I remember listening to my dad's old vinyl as a young teenager and just being in awe of that band. So you take the driving forces between my two FAVORITE bands FooFighters and QOTSA and add the classic amazing contributions on bass and keyboard of John Paul Jones? It's just amazing. I love this band and felt like such a loser missing the show at the Metro last summer and am SO happy that they are back, although at the Aragon (haven't had a good experience there yet, but am pretty certain this will be what changes it for me.)
The music from this band is unlike anything else out there yet a compilation of many things that are. It's been quoted as being "perverted blues." I can see that. It's so complex and just utterly amazing. Watching Dave on drums on the Austin City Limits and SNL just make me smile from ear to ear ... he looks so damn happy just bangin away like Animal, and he is so GOOD. Ugh, I could go on and on. This band is something else and I cannot miss seeing them live. It's much too good to miss. Who knows how long this great thing will last? I need to marvel at them live at least once. I cannot wait!!!
